Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum and this will be my first attempt at actually putting together a paludarium, but I've been trying to read as much as I can about them over the last few months. Even with trying to read about what others have done I feel like I should ask for some more experienced people's input before I actually go try something on my own.

I'm new to this forum and this will be my first attempt at actually putting together a paludarium, but I've been trying to read as much as I can about them over the last few months. Even with trying to read about what others have done I feel like I should ask for some more experienced people's input before I actually go try something on my own.
The basic points of this project:
- Only plants for the foreseeable future
- Since there will be no animals I would like some sort of moving water to have some motion in the tank (such as a waterfall)
- Medium/small budget but limited availability for supplies (I don't have much in the way of real tools, live in a small apartment so not a lot of room to work, some commonly used things like Great Stuff don't seem to be available in my country)
My current plan:
- Buy an Exo Terra 45x45x60cm (18x18x24 inches) terrarium and Eheim Classic 250 filter (of course there is more to purchase but these seemed like the biggest)
- Use the Exo Terra rock background that comes with the terrarium and try to attach rocks/trees/vines (the main reasons for not making a custom background being: the Exo Terra one is relatively thin, which I thought would help maximize the available ground area for plants; and not having access to Great Stuff seems to limit my options for making one myself)
- Have two sections of land for planting: one separated from the water by plexiglass with a egg-crate false bottom and deeper good draining soil, and then a area with some substrate like coco husk on top of hydroballs which is not separated from the water. I thought this would allow for a wider variety of plants since it would support more soil types.
- Have about 10cm wide area of water running along the front and side of the terrarium
- I attempted to sketch out the idea using SketchUp and attached the picture. Hopefully it makes some sense
Main questions:
- Is having the two separate sections of land worth trying or is it a bad idea with no real benefits?
- Will the Eheim filter work for what I plan to use it for? Do my purposed methods for having the filter intake and siphoning water out from the fake bottom seem reasonable?
- Can things (wood, rocks, etc...) be attached to the Exo Terra background? What would be best for this? Silicone adhesive?
- Am I missing anything else that should be obvious? Should I change the plan entirely?
Thanks in advance!
