I went by my local hydroponics/orchid supply store today for some cork bark and they had some 1 gallon size bags of "Growstone" in a new pencil eraser size that they were giving away as samples. Its probably too small for false bottoms, too rough for substrate mix, but it might be great for potting broms, as a bottom/drainage layer for small potted plants or substrate for starting begonia leaves, etc.
So, if your local hydroponics store carries Growstone, you might be able to pick up some free samples. My store didn't have it out front. I was in the back looking through the bark and saw a few bags laying around.
