Intro and question - Exo Terra 36x18x36

First time poster. Been lurking on here for about a week. Not allowed to post anywhere else. lol

My name is Josiah I have been keeping planted aquariums for close to 10 years now. I have been getting an inch to do another tank and it was between salt water and a vivarium.

Planing on doing a fairly elaborate build over several months to get the perfect looking viv.

I really like the size of the extra tall exo terra (wish it was deeper sad face).

Is anyone currently using one? Pros/cons? Not many pictures on the internet and the only reviews on the thing are negative in regards to how poorly they ship.

New and Need Help/Advice

I am new to frogging and this group. I am setting up an 18x18x24 terrarium for RETF's. I am unsure if I have set up the terrarium correctly. I have about 2 inches of hydroballs in the bottom, the mesh sheet next, 2 inches of ZooMed ReptiSoil, a layer of Zoomed Frog Moss, and a layer of leaf litter. I have 3 bromeliads, a pothos, and some sticks to climb. I am using a Mistking starter with 2 nozzles and spray 3 times for 15 seconds. My heat element and thermostat is steady at 82 degrees. My problem is the humidity seems to be low. The humidity raises to 99 percent right after I mist, but then it drops to 35 per cent until I mist again. The top is Half covered with Plexi glass. Thank you for any help and advice.

Hygrometer error?

Hi all, just got an exo terra digital hygrometer. It's new, never been used, but I'm wondering if the readings are right? I've been using it in an empty aquarium that's quarantine for the plants, and it regularly reads 99% humidity. The plants are in pots, and the plants are misted/watered about once a week. There's a glass top that covers the top with no gaps, so I guess it makes sense that it's that high (I've also tested it outside of the tank/opened the top and the hygrometer seems to accurately measure humidity). I'm just curious if this is normal? Otherwise I'm curious why people have to mist so often to keep the humidity in a completely set up vivarium. Thanks!

Which Frog?

Hello!
I'm relatively new to the hobby, and I've been wondering about witch species would be the best for my tank. At the moment, its not all the way set up, but its a 29 gallon tank and I'm hoping to keep three or four frogs in it. The three frogs that I like the most for my vivarium are Dendrobates leucomelas, Phyllobates Bicolor, and Epipedobates anthonyi. I would welcome any advice from people who have kept any of these three species.

I’m getting shipped out overseas soon so I’m condensing my vivs down to two large completely automated ones to make it easier to care for while I’m gone.

Will update with more pics as I go.

silicone curing

I am doing a hygrolon background on the glass, I spread a thin layer of silicone and intend to put on a layer of gorilla glue then stick the Hygrolon to that. My question is how long should I let the silicone cure before i add the gorilla glue. I mean does it need to be fully cured, just feel dry to the touch, or will it cure on out even after the gorilla glue layer has been added?

Eucalyptus bark instead of leaf litter

I’m 80% sure it’s a no go due to some of the chemicals in eucalyptus like eucalytol etc being toxic. Can’t help but ask smarter people than I though.

Not only should it last longer than leaves but the E globulus bark looks super cool.

New to dart frogs

I'm Aimee and am interested in dart frogs and possibly eventual breeding. My boyfriend has been breeding various kinds of fish for 30 years and it seems only natural that we'd decide to breed if we got into the hobby.

I am personally most interested in starting with D. Auratus "Highland Bronze" and have been gathering as much info as I can regarding them.

We've built 3 current viv's but only have 3 White's Tree Frogs in one of them. I have developed a slight obsession with frogs. And I'm looking forward to our new adventure!

Hey guys newer to the site but have been researching for the last few months. After I sold my last reef tank I decided to try my hand at tropical plants and dart frogs. I started with an ExoTerra 18x18x24. The plan is a trio of Azureus eventually. Thread will be pic heavy. Let me know what you think...

Thanks for letting me join! I had quite a few darts 5-6 years ago, but had a break. I just got D. tinctorius 'robertus' and R. benedicta and I can't believe it took me this long to get back into the hobby. Well, I'm back and I'm a member here for the first time and can't wait to learn more!:)

I was hoping someone could give me a bit of clarification. I'm in the process of building a new viv, I have the hygrolon ran down into the drainage layer hoping to wick that water back up. Will I have issues with the ABG touching the hygrolon?

Plant Processing/Quarantine Suggestions

Good Afternoon,

I have a quick question regarding plant processing. If I use the bleach method, is it good practice to still leave the plant in quarantine for a few weeks? Or is the purpose of the bleach to allow quicker incorporation of plants into the vivarium?

I have yet to use bleach on anything - I've been rinsing off and repotting all new plants and then keeping them in quarantine for about a month before planting. But I did have some pest problems a couple months back, so I am looking to improve my protocol. It would be nice to be able to cut down on time in quarantine though.

Also as a more specific question - can I use the bleach method on Fittonias, or will that kill them? Their leaves don't strike me as though they'd be resilient to a bleach solution, but maybe they're tougher than they look.

Thanks

Help Choose Me A Species

I'm trying to find a species of dart frog to take care of in the new tank I built. I decided to build the tank and then let the tank dictate what type of frog I buy. I want to get something that I can house in a group of 3 or 4, be bold enough to see a lot of the time, and can use the vertical space my tank has. This would be my first time housing a frog but I have experience with Crested Geckos, Bearded Dragons, and Leopard Geckos.

This is the tank as I have it setup right now. Its 36" long x 24" tall x 12" wide. Take away a few inches from the width for the foam background. Ultimately, I wanted to be able to see my dart frogs using the cork flat shelve to hang out. I have mainly been looking into D. Tincs (Specifically the Cobalt or Patricia), but I worry they won't venture up that high in the tank.
Do Tincs commonly venture up higher than the ground? Everything I've read on them says they are terrestrial.
Any ideas on an alternative species that could comfortably fit in this tank?

Some details on the tank:
Usually sits around 70-75 degrees F
RH is 75-80%
LED lights are on a 12 hour on/off timer
There is a heating pad on the bottom of the tank to heat the water table and heat cable running under the substrate. Both are on a thermostat
As of right now there is no air circulation but I will be cutting a vent into the top of the tank and attaching a pair of external fans.

While I'm talking about them would it be better to have the fans blowing air in or sucking air out? My room temp is gonna be pretty low (60-65) with little humidity.
