HELP: Heating difficulties

I have an aqueon 45 gallon aquarium (36x24x12) that I have turned into my new dart frog tank. It still stands normally with the open top facing up. I have a glass top covering the open area and heating cable running the underside of tank to try and bring up the humidity and temperature. The room the tank is in normally sits around 60-65 degrees F and so far I have only seen the tank reach a max temp of 70 degrees. I realized a few days after setting the tank up and planting it that I used too much heating cable and the last 6 inches or so of the tank are unheated. Would fixing that gap really make that much of a difference? Any ideas on how to bring the temp of the tank up without having to take it apart or raise the temp of the room?

Im still not sure of the inhabitant species, but I was thinking D. Tinc because of its boldness and relative ease of care.

18x18x24 fine spot leuc viv

Hi all,

I started this build in September 2018, planted in October and added two fine spot leucomelas in January 2019. This is my first viv and I’m learning as I go, but as of now everything seems more or less stable. There is still a lot of empty space, waiting for plants to grow and and am still looking for more plants to fill the background.

Need ideas on what begginer frogs to get

I know I want something that will be out and about during the day. A species that isn't too loud that I can hear them on the other end side of the house. I also want to a species that won't overload me on babies and I can easily find the babies good caring homes before they are full grown. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Tank setup video

Does anyone want to share a link to a good step by step video showing a proper vivarium setup. I have watched a few good videos on the backgrounds and have settled on the Great stuff method with coconut fiber. I'm more looking for some videos showing proper drainage (eggcrate, drilled drain) and substrate videos. Let me know your favorite videos.
Thanks

Introduction of myself and my frogroom

Hello,
I would like to use the opportunity to introduce myself and my frog room. I started with keeping tropical fish a long time ago, and kept them many years. I even kept some day geckos and D. leucomelas during my studies. So, a good few years later, I rediscover frogs and geckos again. However, my main focus are frogs. I care for the following species:

1,2 Dendrobates tinctorius ‚Azureus‘
1,1,4 Ranitomeya summersi
1,1 Ranitomeya imitator ‘Huallaga’
1,1 Ranitomeya imitator ‘Baja Huallaga‘
1,2 Ranitomeya amazonica ‘Arena Blanca’
2,3 Oophaga pumilio ‘Almirante’

My terraria have the following dimensions: 4x 16x16x24 inches, 2x 20x16x24 inches and 28x16x24 inches.

Disappearing Leuc

After not seeing one of the females (Frannie) in my 29G 1.2 leucomelas group for a few weeks, I accepted the truth that she had died. She was always shy for a leuc, but I had never gone anywhere near that long without spotting her. The enclosure is in my home office and I work from home half the week, so I get lots of tank time.

For a full three months, I continued to care for my remaining 1.1, assuming that Frannie was ispod food since I never saw her. Then just yesterday, I glanced over to the tank to find Frannie and the male courting out in the most open spot in the tank. No sign for months and then boom, back like she never left. I may rename her Houdini.

I'm not sure what sent her into hiding in the first place, but I'm glad she's back. So I guess the reason I'm posting this is to encourage folks to keep misting and feeding even when you fear the worst. There might still be a fat and happy frog in there relying on you.

40 Gallon Vert Kit

I was pretty happy with myself last night when I finished the final design on parts to make a 40 gallon vertical terrarium. So I have to share. Used 3mm glass which you'll need to source yourself. Simple to install.

Once I get these out to customers, I'm going to work on a small adapter to make these same parts usable for a horizontal kit. Let me know your thoughts.

MLB 2019 Predictions

We are in the midst of Spring Training right now and wanted to see what everyone's predictions were for this season.

Who is your Team?
Who is making the World Series?

I'm an SF Giants fan first but also root for the local A's in the American League.

As for my World Series prediction, I think the hated Dodgers make it back in the National League, and the Astros in the American League again. That's right, a rematch between the two with the same outcome. Don't care on the outcome of the season though as long as the Dodgers don't win it all, I know my Gigantes have no chance.

Huperzia nummularifolia?

Anyone have experience with this species? I bought it for my viv but this beautiful plant is much longer than I expected.

I’m really liking how it looks, giving a nice jungle vibe to the tank, but the ends are laying on the substrate.

1: Can I trim this plant?
2: Are the cuttings able to be propagated? I’ve read about H. Squarosa propagation...I’m wondering if its similar.

Any info on this plant would be great! I can’t find much about it.

I plan on getting a pair of thumbnails, Imitator intermedius most likely since I've read they're one of the boldest of the thumbnail species and for my first species, I want to make sure I see them! While I love leucs and I know they're good beginner frogs, I inherited a 12x12x18 from somebody, so I can't go with a bigger species like a leuc (plus I live in an apartment and a leuc has a pretty loud call that may annoy my neighbors).

My last vivarium was for a chahoua gecko and I had so much fun building it (18x18x24). I can't wait to start a new one! This is the one I built.

EDIT: Nevermind... apparently you have to make two threads in this area, not just posts. Everything works now.

I have made one thread and replied twice in other threads here to reach the quota for allowing posting in other parts of the forum. I am still getting permission denied messages when trying to reply to threads in other parts of the forum, and also when I click on my username in the upper right corner of the screen. I have sent a message through the "Contact Us" page a while back (and again today) and never received a response. Could someone help me out?

Thumbnails: Film Canister vs. Floral Water Pick Tube

I'm wondering if anyone has tried and had success using floral water pick tubes as a laying spot for thumbnail species. I saw them on NE Herp the other day and thought they would be nice to use as they're smaller than film canisters and easier to hide in a viv. It's these but without the cap, opening is 3/4" wide:

Frogs always on front glass

Recently, I've noticed that all my vents are spending most of their time on the front glass of their viv. They we a lot more timid when they were in a smaller viv, but now in their bigger one (which they've been in for a few months) they are out so much more which was a surprise.

My only concern is that I might not be misting enough. The water on the front glass seems to evaporate last, so they could be spending a lot of time there just to absorb water. At any given time of the day, I usually see at least 3/6 on the front glass, and often more. Has anyone else seen such behavior?

Breeding or Aggressive Leucs?

$

I've had 6 leucs in a 75gal for almost three years and I've noticed a lot of behavioral changes since I mixed things up quite a bit last Sunday. They had been in my finished basement which is around 65 degrees. No heat except the dual T5 lighting. Inside tank temp was about 68-72 for night and day. Normal behavior with normal calling, but all separate in their own hiding spots.

I moved them upstairs into the living room near a wall vent and its around 75 outside the tank. It was quite a hassle and there were a lot of bumps along the way. I also reintroduced a frog that had been removed for the last 6 months to help it put on weight.

It's 3 days later and instead of taking a few days to settle in they are running amok in there like wild banshees. There are now 2 solid couples and the calling is non-stop during daylight hours. The 6th frog I reintroduced is in the video, with the broken black band. They have been doing a lot of mimicking each other.

So is this a mating dance or aggression?

New to Dendroboard and Dart Frogs

Hey everyone, finally joined this site after lurking for awhile. I'm getting back into keeping Frogs and Geckos after moving down to North Carolina. I just bought a Exo Terra 18x18x24 and am planning a great stuff-silicone vivarium with waterfall and shallow pond. I'm going full swing to setting up my frog/gecko room. I found a 40 Gallon Breeder tank on Letgo and I'm picking up a 20 gal tall and long tomorrow to house my dart frogs.
Dendrobates Auratus "Costa Rica" will be my first dart frogs. I found a classified listing near me in Charlotte selling a pair that I hope can breed.
I have kept Red eyed tree frogs, Crested and Leopard and Marble Geckos, Ball Python, Southern Painted Turtle, Anoles. Had to give them away/sell them when I moved.
Plan on putting Red eyed tree frogs in my Exo-Terra. Clown tree frogs in a 20gal tall, Coast Rica Auratus in the 40 gal and want to buy a couple of Leucomelas for my 20 gal tall. I'm also thinking about a 55gal that could house a few Cobolts, or Terribilis.

I plan on videotaping the build of the Vivariums and I'll post pictures to the board here as well. Looking forward to getting some advice from everyone.
Going to Repticon whenever its in North Carolina.

Peace
