Fluval Bug Bites

Hello all! I need help picking a species.

Hello everyone!

Im not exactly "new" to caring for our cold-blooded friends, but I do need some help with recommendations for my vivarium.

I am mostly a carnivorous plant grower, I grow nepenthes from the highland areas of the Indonesian mountain ranges. (that's not really important, but it does explain why my setup gets as cold as it does, these temps are basically non-negotiable for my plants to live)

The enclosure I would like to add some sort of reptile/amphibian to is a homemade 36"x24"x24" acrylic tank, Days stay in the 74-76 degree range and nights drop down to 56-61 degrees, humidity is almost always above 90%. Does anyone know of anything that would like it in the tank as is? I would prefer something that stays smaller around 2" or under.

P.S.

After going through some testing I found I can have 2 - 8" heated cork rounds that keep their internal temp at an almost constant 65-68, even during the full 55 degree night drop.

Thank you for any and all help!

Hi all, I've been lurking for a long time, dreaming of frogs but not pulling the trigger. However, I'm planning on getting my tiny rainbow buddies after a move in the next few years, and have started setting up a nano test vivarium, to make sure I get get it as close to right as possible while I don't have them.

Anywho, I have some odds and ends questions that the search function hasn't been able to answer for me:

Has anyone tried the Zilla 20L front-opening vivarium? Is it frogproof, and does it seem sturdy? It is the size I would like for my "forever" tank, and the multiple access directions seems nice for my sanity. I already have shelving that would fit a 20 long, but not the deeper Exoterra in the same size range.

Can pulmonate aquatic snails transition to land in the high humidity of a dart frog vivarium? I have some moss that has been grown submerged for a year or more. It's unlikely to harbor any eggs for terrestrial species at this point, I imagine, but my tank does have ramshorns and Physa snails, which have lungs. I would rather not bring them into the vivarium as hitchhikers, if they survive the transition.

Anyway, thanks for your time!

This has probably been answered, and I have drilled previously different sizes of Exo Terra, but does anybody know if the extra large 36 x 18 x 36 bottom is tempered glass? Thanks

Hello Group,

Currently building out two 18x18x24 Exo-Terra into vivariums. The vivariums will be sister tanks, sitting side by side while looking as one.

This will be my first time keeping frogs, moving over from geckos.

The plan is to complete and plant the tanks, this month, then allow them to grow in. Hopefully adding frogs around the start of July.

The tanks will house the following separately D. tinctorius 'Azureus' and "Green Sipilawini".

Thank to all who have posted on this site, allowing us to learn.

90x50x45cm Fluorescent lamp queastion

Hello everyone!
My name is Bartek and I live in Poland.
I want to create my viv again and I am thinking about changing my lightning. Now I am using four fluorescent lamp: 2x39W T5 (10000k, 8500k) and 2x35W T5 (6500k). 35W lamps are switched off because I think they have been burning my plants. I think that better option would be 2x39W 6500k and 1x35W 8500k. My tank is 90x50x45cm. What do you think? Would it be enough?
My viv is going to be mainly with tropical mosses and small plants.
Thanks for help!

Deformed Tadpole 😞

Has anyone ever experienced a tadpole with what looks like a blister or pocket of air growing on it? Noticed it 2 weeks ago but it was small; it had steadily grown since and the poor thing is constantly trying to stay upright. Most the time it ends up on it's side or even upside down. I've attached a couple of pics. Thanks in advance for any responses!! PS it's a Leuc/Bumblebee

Air Plenum DIY project

This is a project that I concocted to provide air circulation in both of my ExoTerra vivariums. I used a:
-low speed muffin fan
-corrugated sheet plastic
-electrical tape
-clothes hanger
The “air box” houses the fan & sits behind the tank.

The “top duct” directs the air flow from the air box to the strip opening along the top of the tank.

The “frame” supports the air box on the back of the tank.

The “air box” dimensions are based on the size of the fan & space available in the back of the tank. My fan is 3.1x3.1x1.5 so the box is 4x6x3. The box included a overhanging top flap that will sit on top of the “top duct”.
The “top duct” is a upside down trough that straddles the back tank edge. The tank cover along the top of the tank’s back needs to be open for air intro. Again, the duct dimensions are dependent on the length of the strip opening & the size of the air box vent. The vent for this project is 4x1.5 & the strip opening is 24x0.5 w/1.25 lip. The duct’s final dimensions are 18x1.5x2. The top flap from the air box & flaps created by cutting the opening duct for the vent opening, are used to connect w/ electrical tape. The tape is also used to form duct end caps & of course, joining box & duct edges.
The “frame” is formed by bending a clothes hanger to support the “air box” onto the back of the tank & adjusted to position of the entire assembly. For this project, the box needed to stand off the back of the tank approx 0.5 so, had to form bottom legs at the bottom of the box.
This plenum was designed to provide efficient & total tank air circulation from the top of the tank & minimizes view & sound of source.

Sturdy vivarium plant recommendations

I have two large vivariums (3' tall x 2' wide x 18" deep) which house pairs of Leachies. I love these guys but they destroy most everything I plant in these tanks. I would prefer to keep these tanks natural but about the only thing I have found which survives their nightly rampaging and vivarium environment are really beefy Sansevieria species. The substrate is ABG and the tanks are on an auto-mister schedule morning and evening to keep a relative humidity between 50-90%.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what else I can plant in these tanks? The geckos are close to a pound each with sharp nails (for anyone not familiar with Leachies).
Thanks,
- Paul

These little things are showing up in clusters on the edges of leaf litter, underside of bromeliads and wood l, what are they? They look like tiny mushrooms but I don't think that's what they are. they turn dark brown after a day and then that's it so far.

Hello,

I made this account a while back but I don't remember ever actually making a post. I've been primarily a lurker, who's gathered a lot of good information from this site.

Anyhows, just wanted to introduce my self. I own a small Exo Terra tank (18x18x24) which I hope will be home to a Dendrobates auratus 'Peña or two.

How to raise A.Hahneli "Tahuyao" from eggs to frogs

$

Hello! I wanted to share a recent grow report I made on the dutch forg forum.
I tried my best to translate... :)

Introduction : I own 4 Ameerege Hahneli "Tahuyao" adults from the Understory Enterprises line. 3 Males and 1 female. These are tiny black frogs with 2 white dorsal stripes, brownish leggs, a blue belly and yellow to red signalspots on the back of their legs. Both front and back. I purchased these frogs in 2014 from Ruud Schouten (Dutch Rana).

Picture of a male :

These frogs are most active in the early morning and late noon/evening and more shy for the rest of the day. At dusk and dawn you can hear the males calling almost nonstop. I spray them water for 3x 12 seconds a day and the temperture is 20°c-24°c.

Youtube fragment of the dominant male calling : https://youtu.be/u_a5bOYkJ2c

When they breed, I find their clutches mostly in film cannisters. The male can always be found nearby guarding the eggs.

Picture of an egg clutch :

When the young tadpoles are ready to come out of the eggs, the males helps them and carries the tadpoles on his back towards water.

Picture of the male and his tadpoles :

Now, my experience tels me the tadpole quickly die when they are raised in still water. This takes almost no longer than a day or 2. So, when raising these tadpoles we need running water!! For this grow report,I installed a small aquarium containing a pomp to get the water running, a big rock for land acces and some tiny gravel for shelter. I aslo find that the water is best kept on room temperature. So i do not add an aquriumheater or something like that. The tadpoles need to grow slowly and warm water speeds up their devolpment.

Here are some pictures of the hahneli tadpole setup i used for this report (and my cat came to say hi...) :

Now we are ready to start raising some tadpoles!

But first we need to help the tadpoles out of their clutch. For this i use some basic equipment :

Youtube fragment of how i release them from the clutch : https://youtu.be/2Ba0IPyXJ-A

I also write down of the tank how many tadpoles I released in the aquarium :

Now the tadpoles were released in the water, I tested between 3 different foodsources i use for feeding tadpoles. I found that they only eat from the algae wafers, so i dont gave them fishflok or koi staples annymore. Koi staples from hikari are amazing for raising tinctorius by the way!

I realised i also forgot to put oakleaves in the water, so I added these and now we can lay back and watch the tadpoles eat and develop into frogs.
The complete morphose take around 2months.

Now the young frogs come on land, I use a plastic container with just basic setup to raise them during the first month of their lives. This makes it easier to count them and make sure they grow well! The frogs all came on land with their tale still attached to them. Only one tadpole did not completely develop, so i am left with 14 frogs instead of 15. I still keep them on roomtemperature, i don't think these will benefit from higher temperatures! Allot of Ameerega have growth problems and i believe temperture has a big influence on this!

For these young frogs, it is realy important to give them realy small food.
The first 2 weeks the almost only eat the smallest of springtails. After the first weeks I also feed them smallfruitflies and aphids, but for some it still is hard to eat.
It also is realy important to give them aditional vitamines and cal/mag, I use the Dutch Rana brand.

A picture to compare the size of the frogs with an adult springtail :

A month after they are introduced to the plastic container, their tale has grown completly in and their colors are showing now. They are also able to eat all seize of springtails, aphids, sowbugs and small fruitflies, not yet big fruitflies at this time.

2 months after they came on land and the frogs are all devolped without any problems, it is time to put them i a bigger tank were they can be kept and raised until they are sold. The temperature is still around 19°c-21°c, I will not use a heating source for the frogs until they are 6-8 months old.

Another month passes by and the frogs are now becomming more shy and just like their parents are mostly seen during dusk or dawn. They still are on the same diet, but now they also eat big fruitflies! Altho they still prefer smaller flies. I added some more oak leaves and a bromeliad to the tank so they show theirselves a little more and also have more places to hide.

The frogs are now 3months old and 1/3 or half the size of their parents.
I will keep them until they are +-9 months old before i sell them and the caresheet pretty much stays the same.

If I forgot something or if you have any comments or questions, please post them!

I hope this can be helpfull!

Greets,

Tijl

Hi, my name is Dusty, I joined the group awhile back to see the pictures but never got around to posting. I'm currently living in Starkville, MS, any local froggers hit me up. I currently have a group of Azureus that I'm growing into adults and should have a pair of standard Luecs being added to the collection soon. I look forward to sharing with and learning from you guys.

Mistking problem

I'm having trouble working my mistking and I'm just trying to figure out what the exact problem is. I've had this thing sitting around for a while and I wanted to bring it out to use it on one of my setups, but when I turned it on, the timer wasn't turning on and the pump wasn't running. Now, my question is, is it possible that the pump is still working, even if it wasn't running, because the timer is broken? Or would they simply both be broken? The power supply is still functional.

Newbie in planning stages

Hi there. I'm researching the idea of combining my love of orchids into a paludarium with as many different aquatic and herp species as I can. I transformed my son's Bearded Dragon tank into a bioactive and now I am hooked. Is it possible to combine dart frogs with small arboreal geckos, newt, fish, crustaceans, and inverts? I invision a tropical or subtropical paludarium with orchids (?) and other plants appropriate. Looking for sites with examples and wisdom from old hands at this. I'm not interested in breeding or having a large population of any one species.

Edit - Is it doable to just have a couple frogs with fish and fiddler crabs? I see now that geckos are not recommended. How about one tiny green anole for the upper story? I'm looking at a 24x12x36 paludarium

Howdy all!

New member here, I have been lurking for a week or so and decided to join up.

I recently acquired a 18x18x36 ZooMed Paludarium. I am in the planning stages for setting up the bioactive environment. I was initially planning to setup for tree frogs but after researching they all seem to be nocturnal. I have two questions for the community.

1. Is there a species of tree frogs that are not nocturnal.

2. Would Tincs do well in a Paludarium setup? My concern is that they would not utilize the full canopy. From what I have read they seem to be ground dwellers.

Thanks,

Squibs
